Shaheem Sanchez lost his hearing at the age of four. He taught himself to dance by feeling the vibrations of the music.Vibrations from noise in the outside world confuse his perception of the music. This is his process.
“Move your feet and feel it in the space between... Lose it.” - Oh Wonder
Q: What is this?
A: DanceOn’s "Oh Wonder - Lose It | Deaf Dancer | #JustLoseIt" is part of ARTIST REQUEST, a weekly series that pairs emerging music artists with industry-leading choreographers and dancers. This episode of ARTIST REQUEST was directed and edited by David Javier.
Q: Who is this insanely talented dancer?
Following in his father’s footsteps, Shaheem Sanchez, aka deafdancershaheem, started dancing at age 11, despite losing his hearing at age four. Though his father passed before he was born, his family told him stories about his father’s dance skills and he thought, why not give dance a shot? Dance has become a very important part of his life. He loves to feel the music, go with the flow, and feel the peace that comes from dance. By feeling the beat and reading the body language of his collaborators, Shaheem is able to connect to the music and express himself. It is important to him to show that deaf people can do anything, because anything is possible. Fun Fact: Shaheem passed down his love of dance to his little brother Kida The Great (you may have heard of him!)
Lando Wilkins provided his brilliant choreography for this video. Lando has previously worked with Flying Lotus, Jay Park, Snoop Dogg, Simon Cowell, Movement Lifestyle, Pandora Radio, Converse, and appeared on seasons 3 and 7 of America's Best Dance Crew, with Boxcuttuhz and Mos Wanted Crew respectively.
Q: Who made that catchy song?
A: Oh Wonder is an alt-pop duo from London with members Josephine Vander Gucht and Anthony West. Beginning in 2014, Josephine & Anthony set out to release a new song every month, culminating the release of their debut album in September 2015. Their official music video for “Lose It” went viral, racking over 1.3 million views. In the video, they invited 5 dancers to what they think is an audition for the official music video, only to surprise them by making them the stars of the actual video! Both their video and Oh Wonder - Lose It | Deaf Dancer | #JustLoseIt are celebrations of people losing themselves to music regardless of personal circumstances.
