Far West was a Stern-wheel paddle steamer, launched in 1883 length 190 feet long, with a beam of 33 feet, draft of 30 in. It has 3 boilers with 2 herbertson steam engines to turn paddlewheel.
Between 1870 to 1883 it could haul 200 tones of freight and 30 passengers per trip, up and down the Missour and yellowstone rivers in the Montana North and South Dakota.
Famous river boat captain Grant Marsh often piloted the paddle steamer. The Far West was known as a fast boat because she had powerful engines, a hull with limited water resistance, and a low profile that reduced wind resistance.
She set a number of speed records for both upstream and downstream travel on the Missouri and the Yellowstone.
